There is no doubt that the Atlas is the more versatile option between the two. It's the most spacious in the front, middle and third row, while providing more cargo space. You can comfortably seat 7 people in the Atlas with five adults and two children. Everyone will be comfortable. The Tiguan is best for two adults and 3 teenagers or four adults. So, if your kids are growing up or are already teenagers and you tend to take long trips with a lot of stuff in the vehicle, the Atlas is probably the best option.
The Atlas is also the best option if you need to tow with your SUV, as it can tow up to 5,000 pounds, much more than the Tiguan. Of course, that means the Atlas and its 3.6-liter V6 engine isn't as fuel efficient as the Tiguan.
So, here is everything in summary. If you need space for five or more passengers and all of their luggage on a regular basis and need to tow, get the Atlas. If you're a younger family with small children, don't really have to tow and want to focus on lowering the costs of buying and owning, the Tiguan is the best option.
