When vehicles are reviewed in a given segment, it's always interesting to play the comparison game to see how the newcomers fare against the products already on the market.
When two models are reviewed in the same year, it's even more relevant, as it gives us a chance to see how the present and future are perceived within a manufacturer.
The renewal of the Hyundai Tucson for 2022, as well as the arrival of the Volkswagen Taos in the picture, gives us a good idea of the positioning of each company. And as you'll see, Volkswagen still knows how to do things right.
Classic styling
When considering a vehicle, it's important to think about how it will age in the marketplace. This affects its resale value, and when a model has great lines, it will last longer. With the Tucson, Hyundai has taken some liberties to deliver something different. This will please some people, but it will slow down others, especially since in a few years, the Tucson's signature look will no longer be very relevant.
On the other hand, when you look at the new Taos, you immediately recognize Volkswagen's expertise. In fact, the company doesn't need to dare or provoke to sell vehicles. It continues to offer classic styling and tasteful design.
In 10 years, the Taos will still look good. The Tucson...
Interior design
On board, there are two different approaches. Once again, Hyundai's hyper-modern solution, this time confronted with Volkswagen's classic AND modern style. Here, the battle isn't even close.
Inside the Taos, we find a great dashboard dominated by the multimedia system screen, as well as Volkswagen's Digital Cockpit. The latter takes the form of a screen on the instrument cluster, all integrated into a very tasteful module.
In the Tucson, in front of the driver, there is only a screen on the dashboard. Honestly, aesthetically, it's not very elegant and it translates into a soulless presentation. Getting into either vehicle makes you want to get behind the wheel of one and get out of the other.
Behind the wheel
And let's talk about the driving experience. If Hyundai has done an excellent job of making its Tucson a fun vehicle to drive, how can one product compete with Volkswagen's expertise in this area? The Taos is a worthy successor to the previous-generation Tiguan, which was compared to the compact Golf in terms of handling! That's no small feat.
For an in-depth look, don't hesitate to come and see us at the dealership. We're sure the Taos will seduce you.
