The subcompact SUV segment keeps welcoming new players. Two of them are the Volkswagen Taos and Toyota Corolla Cross, which are making their debuts for the next year.
Of course, the comparison between these two new offerings is inevitable. So let's take a moment to see why the Volkswagen model is more interesting.
Style
Toyota didn't go overboard with its Corolla Cross. Its style is simple, without flare and strongly inspired by the RAV4. It's not ugly, but it doesn't turn heads. The opposite is true when you look at the Volkswagen Taos. Its lines are also classic, but also timeless. Its design exudes good taste and it will certainly age well. And what can I say about the colors offered, which are lively as can be.
The same comment applies to the interior. Toyota's recipe is traditional, while Volkswagen takes a more modern approach. There's also that German build quality that can't be overlooked. In fact, it's a must-have.
A more interesting powertrain
The Toyota Corolla Cross will be powered by the 2-liter 4-cylinder engine that already serves versions of the Corolla (the car). Its power is decent at 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, but in the service of a heavier vehicle, it's going to be fair; the lack of torque is going to show.
Volkswagen didn't skimp and introduced a new engine with the Taos, a 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder. It offers 158 horsepower, but more importantly, 184 pound-feet of torque that are delivered as early as 1,750 rpm, which ensures very quick starts and accelerations.
That's why it's so much more interesting with the Taos; you don't feel left out, mechanically speaking.
Interior volume
From all points of view, the interior space is more generous with the Taos. More importantly, the cargo volume is larger, which increases the vehicle's versatility. Behind the two rows of seats, the Taos offers 790 liters, about 100 more than the Corolla Cross. Behind the first row, the Taos sees 1,866 liters available when the rear seats are folded down. Figures for the Corolla Cross are not yet available, but they won't be as impressive.
The Volkswagen model will give you more flexibility, not to mention more modernity, style and performance.
A logical choice, then.
