We tend to think of all-wheel drive systems as being only useful in certain conditions such as when there is a snowstorm or an ice- or snow-covered road that you have to climb. That said, all-wheel drive systems like the Volkswagen 4Motion AWD technology are useful year-round.
The Volkswagen 4Motion system is a continuously engaged torque distribution AWD system that doesn't have a set power distribution ratio. Traditional all-wheel drive systems send a percentage of the available engine torque to the front axle and another percentage to the rear axle, creating a situation where every wheel gets power along a fixed ratio. The Volkswagen 4Motion system can constantly distributing power between the axles based on the situation. In normal driving conditions, the front axle gets the most torque in order to achieve the highest level of efficiency. Power can be instantly transferred to the rear axle to ensure preserved grip and continuous traction, however, should it be required.
This system has many uses in summer including when you are towing, when you are driving on a wet road, when you are driving on a gravel road, or should you need to avoid an obstacle such as moose or deer. Even when driving in summer, torque is constantly moving from the front to the rear axle and vice versa in your Volkswagen.
That said, the biggest advantage of this technology is that because it only kicks in when it is needed, you enjoy significant improvements in fuel economy. The system is only there when you want it to be, meaning that you don't have to pay the increase fuel consumption of an all-wheel drive system when the road is clear, and the weather is nice out.
