Volkswagen is committed to developing and installing advanced safety and driver assistance technologies. These include increasingly autonomous systems that will—one day—lead to fully autonomous vehicles. The platform that delivers Volkswagen's latest systems is IQ.Drive, which is available in several models. Several of these technologies fall under a Level 2 automation classification, where steering, braking and acceleration are supervised by the driver.
Here, we take a look at IQ.Drive and its suite of technologies that add a peace of mind to driving.
Systems that fall under the IQ.Drive umbrella
The IQ.Drive family is rather large. Some models may offer different variations of IQ.Drive, so it's important to consult with the safety/driver assistance features listing of the vehicle(s) that have your interest.
Technologies currently include a variety of features like: Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Park Distance Control, Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Braking, Adaptive Front-Lighting, Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Warning, High Beam Control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Each model year offers new updates and/or systems.
Next, we highlight a few of the most interesting technologies in the suite.
Emergency Assist brings the vehicle to a safe stop
When fully activated, Emergency Assist brings the vehicle to a complete stop. If the driver does not respond to several visual, audible, and braking alerts, the vehicle activates its flashers, weaves to warn other drivers, and then comes to a complete stop. This feature is very useful in medical or other situations when the driver is not responsive or incapacitated.
Travel Assist senses driver distraction and more
Travel Assist features Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Assist to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane and at a safe distance from forward traffic. Operating at speeds under 153 km/h, Travel Assist requires drivers to keep both hands on the steering wheel. If it senses the lack of hands on the steering wheel after 15 seconds, the system activates Emergency Assist to provide warnings and a complete vehicle stop if necessary.
IQ.Drive has several other advanced features that provide a safer and more confident driving experience while keeping the signature Volkswagen driving dynamics buyers love.
