The 2021 Volkswagen Taos vs. Tiguan: What are the Differences?

The all-new 2022 Taos is generating a lot of excitement with its arrival in the summer of 2021. Designed to be a compact crossover, it actually fits between the compact and subcompact crossover segments. The standout profile, well-apportioned equipment and a brand-new engine are just the start of its legacy.

We've received several questions about the differences between the Taos and its larger Tiguan sibling. Here, we explain the primary differences so you can make a better choice for your needs.

The 2022 Volkswagen Taos fits in tighter spaces

For starters, the Taos is 236 mm shorter than the Tiguan. If you prefer a crossover that has the DNA of the Tiguan but can fit into even smaller parking spots, or venture with ease into the urban jungle, the Taos is happy to help. It's a great vehicle for the city or if you just prefer more in a smaller package.

The Taos features a new 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder that generates 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. That is a nice push of torque for the vehicle's size and weight, and you won't be disappointed at the feel and responsiveness it creates. The engine has an impressive fuel efficiency, with 8.4 L/100 km in the city and 6.5 L/100 km on the highway with FWD and 9.4/7.4 L/100 km with AWD.

The larger Tiguan is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo that bumps up to 184 horsepower, maintaining the excitement level.

The 2021 Volkswagen Taos is more compact inside, yet still roomy

The Taos has 2,817 litres of passenger volume and up to 1,877 litres of cargo volume. There are 796 litres of cargo volume behind upright rear seats, making the Taos a roomy and versatile option if you need a smaller exterior without sacrificing too much interior volume.

The larger Tiguan extends total cargo volume to around 2,080 litres, as expected.

Overall, if you have a larger family with more needs, the Tiguan may be a better option because it can also be fitted with an optional third row. However, the Taos will fit a small family with room to spare.
