The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI has been entirely refreshed, bringing more power, more technology and more style to the eight generation of the original hot hatch.
A Modernised style
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI features a totally new appearance that makes it stand out from its competition, while keeping a familiar feel that makes it instantly recognisable as a Golf. Despite keeping the same wheelbase, the new GTI is longer and leaner, which makes it look more planted and athletic. Up front, the new bumper incorporates five LED modules in an X pattern inside the honeycomb grille on each side in order to create a distinctive visual signature even at night. The rear end features a strong appearance due to its horizontal character lines and its spoiler at the top of the rear window. The interior of the new GTI has also been modernised, with a new uncluttered design, thanks to the integration of the MIB3 infotainment system which allows for far fewer physical controls, including those for the climate control system. Despite these changes, the distinctive touches that have been a staple of the GTI for decades are still there, like the tartan seat fabric and the Golf ball shifter for the manual gearbox.
A more dynamic driving experience
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI improves on the previous model in terms of driving dynamics and enjoyment due to a reworked suspension system and a more powerful engine. The 2.0L turbocharged unit found in the previous model has been modernised in order to now deliver 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque and increased fuel efficiency. The same choice of a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG transmission is offered, but a new electronically controlled limited-slip front differential makes sure the power is put to the ground in the best way possible, even on less-than-ideal road surfaces. The suspension was also gone over, with increased spring rates front and rear in order to improve handling and to make for a more stable behaviour at high speeds.
