After two years of absence, the Volkswagen Golf R returns to the market in 2022 in an entirely new form that is more powerful and more dynamic than the previous version.
More power
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R retains the same engine as the previous generation, but it boosts its output by 27 horsepower and by 15 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. This means the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine found under the hood of the new Golf R is rated at 315 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. When the 6-speed manual transmission is selected, the maximum torque stays at 280 lb-ft. This extra power is directed to the standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system that now includes a torque vectoring rear differential that can vary the power it sends to both rear wheel in order to help the Golf R corner with less understeer and more precision.
A Stiffer suspension
The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R sees its suspension system being entirely reworked to improve its handling characteristics and its performance on twisty roads, without sacrificing its comfort and drivability. With the assistance of the firmer springs and anti-roll bar, the adaptive damping suspension is able to offer a more stable and solid feel around corners while not being punishing on rougher roads.
More technology than ever
Like every other Mk8 Golfs, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R takes a big step forward in terms of onboard technology. This includes the new infotainment system that incorporates most of the controls for various systems in order to make for a cleaner look to the interior. This screen is also used to operate the drive mode selection system that can alter the behavior of many systems, including the all-wheel drive system. Another addition to the Golf R is the 10.25-inch digital cockpit which can display a large amount of information that is useful for spirited driving in a presentation that is unique to the R.
