Volkswagen Canada recently lifted the veil on the 2024 Golf GTI 380, a special edition crafted exclusively for North American consumers. This model serves as an ode to the rich heritage of the manual transmission in Volkswagen's iconic hot hatch lineup, marking its final year of production.
The Golf GTI 380's name pays homage to its internal factory designation, connecting it to Volkswagen's 2002 fourth-generation special edition GTI “337”. This particular edition is intended to provide a distinct driving experience, focusing on the tactile pleasure of a manual gearbox. Available in two specialized trims—"Autobahn" and "Performance"—the GTI 380 brings unique aesthetic features to its exterior. The wheels are 19-inch gloss black multi-spoke aluminum-alloy rims, fitted with summer performance tires. Further design elements include a gloss black roof and mirror caps, all contrasting with the GTI's signature red exterior accents.
To add an extra layer of exclusivity, Volkswagen offers the GTI 380 in two bespoke metallic exterior shades: Pomelo Yellow and Dolphin Gray, in addition to the existing palette of Deep Black Pearl, Kings Red Metallic, and Oryx White Pearl. These exclusive color options accentuate the vehicle's sporty appearance while paying tribute to its storied history.
The inside of the GTI 380 doesn't disappoint either. The "Autobahn" trim showcases the traditional Scalepaper Plaid cloth seats adorned with honeycomb accents. Those who opt for the "Performance" trim will enjoy Vienna leather seating surfaces as standard, although there's an option to revert to the classic Scalepaper Plaid upon request. The manual shift knob, inspired by a golf ball, retains its position in the GTI 380, a nod to the GTI lineage.
Technologically, the GTI 380 doesn't skimp on driving dynamics. The DCC adaptive damping system is standard across both trims, ensuring a ride that's responsive and finely tuned. Under the hood, the GTI 380 boasts a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, capable of generating 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. While this edition will be the last to offer a 6-speed manual transmission, the dual-clutch DSG transmission will continue to feature in future GTIs.
The 2024 Golf GTI 380 is set to arrive at Canadian dealerships in early Fall, with a starting MSRP of $36,895. Those who prefer a dual-clutch system can still avail themselves of the DSG-equipped GTI, offered in three trims and starting at $34,795. This release not only marks the end of manual transmissions in the Golf GTI but also in the Golf R and Jetta models for 2024. However, the sporty Jetta GLI will maintain its three-pedal version into 2024 and beyond.
